In 1994 Psychiatric Services formally recognized the importance of contributions to the professional literature by patients and by family members with the establishment of the Personal Accounts column. As part of this year's observance of Psychiatric Services' 50 years of publication, the Personal Accounts column is examining the history of the journal's publication of first-person accounts.
