Oral History Collection: A Finding Aid

The Oral History Collection comprises transcripts of interviews conducted from 2006 to 2015 by Ellen S. More, Ph.D., founding director of Lamar Soutter Library’s Office of Medical History and Archives (OMHA) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS). The interviews were conducted as part of Dr. More’s research into the history of UMMS, which is chronicled in her book, Beating the Odds: The University of Massachusetts Medical School, A History, 1962–2012 (2017). Interviewees include former and current members of the administration, faculty, staff, students, politicians, and community members.

Reinhard, Kristine M.
The University of Massachusetts Medical School located in Worcester, Massachusetts was founded in 1962 and is the first and only public medical school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Established to provide affordable, high-quality medical education to state residents and to increase the number of primary care physicians practicing in the state, the school is comprised of the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Graduate School of Nursing. Its clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care, is the largest health care provider in central and western Massachusetts. This collection is composed of publications created by the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and University of Massachusetts Memorial Health Care.

<p>This collection was processed by Kristine M. Reinhard in 2013. News clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper and all materials were placed in acid-free folders. Additions to this collection were received in June 2017. The bulk of the additional materials pertain to the Homer Gage Library at Memorial Hospital and comprise Series VII of the collection. Other material was added to existing series’ where applicable. The updated finding aid was completed in August 2017, then updated again to include additional materials in January 2020.</p>

The Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research (formerly Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology) was established in 1944 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts by Dr. Gregory Pincus and Dr. Hudson Hoagland. This collection documents the Worcester Foundation history and development until its 1997 merger with the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts. Also included in this collection are materials related to the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research faculty members.
<p>This collection was processed by Dina Litvak in 2014. Processing of additional material was completed by Kristine Sjostedt in 2017 and 2018. News clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper and all materials were placed in acid-free folders. Photographs were digitized and are stored internally on the Archives’ network system.
