Introduction: Massachusetts has been at the forefront of incorporating a formal research component into its newborn screening programme to advance our understanding of disease, its prevention and the related necessary services available to populations. This chapter advocates that research be recognized as an integral component of any newborn screening programme and that the infrastructure required within the programme to support such research be promoted as a provision of public health responsibility.Source
